ORLANDO’S STORY

We met Orlando Ospina, an experienced agronomist and coffee researcher, on a recent trip to Colombia. He is inspirational in his commitment, passion and zeal for specialty coffee despite the difficulties and hardships of growing exotic varietals on his small farm, Las Marias.

The Mokka varietal is of special significance to Orlando and he has just 300 healthy trees on his plantation. Mokka is rare and costly to grow because of its susceptibility to rain and humidity, low yield, and tiny cherry size. 2022 was a particularly tough year and the fruit of Orlando’s labours were just 4 kilograms of precious Mokka green beans. Orlando tells of the labour that went into picking this coffee, then processing it through a natural, anaerobic process, and hand sorting it. His eyes are full of fervour as he prepares the coffee for our tasting.

Tasty, exotic and rare, this coffee comes at a cost relative to the amazing work and dedication that the farmer has invested in this meagre crop. Being at the right spot at the right time, Zest was able to secure this small sack of coffee for coffee lovers in Australia to share.
